Masters in Germany Requirements for Indians 2027 Guide
STUDY IN GERMANY · 2027 PLANNING GUIDE Your application needs a clear plan. Your German learning does too. Here’s how to prepare both without confusing an admission requirement with a useful language skill. By BookMyLanguage · Sources checked 24 October 2026 · For students planning 2027 entry The quick answer Masters in Germany requirements for Indian students depend on the programme. Start with your degree’s recognition and subject fit, then check grades, language evidence, documents and application deadlines. Review the applicable APS process, including whether dMAT affects your applicant group. Treat visa preparation as a separate checklist. German matters, but the rule is programme specific. An English taught Master’s can have different language requirements from a German taught degree. Learning German remains a practical part of preparing for life outside the lecture hall. Find your next step Academic eligibility APS and dMAT German and English language requirements Documents and application routes German learning plan and charts Your application checklist Common questions 1. Start with the programme, then check your eligibility It is tempting to begin with a list of famous universitiess. A more useful first question is: “Which programmes actually match what I studied?” Write down your degree, specialisation, subjects, grades and intended intake before building your shortlist. uni assist’s Master’s guidance explains that applicants generally need a recognised undergraduate qualification equivalent to a German bachelor’s, usually in a related subject. Additional admission criteria vary. Some universities accept applications before the first degree is complete; others do not. Check the exact rules for your situation. Your degree title alone may not explain your academic background. Keep your transcript and course descriptions together so you can compare them with the programme’s requirements. Where a university asks for particular modules or credits, make a small comparison sheet. Put the requested subject in one column and your supporting academic document in the next. Is there one minimum CGPA for a Master’s in Germany? No single score should be treated as the admission rule for every programme. DAAD India stresses that each university or programme sets its own criteria. Record the stated grade requirement for each course you are considering, including how international grades are assessed. For planning, use three labels: “appears to meet the published criteria”, “needs clarification” and “does not meet a stated requirement”. This makes your shortlist more useful than a list ranked only by reputation. It also helps you identify the questions worth asking the admissions team. What about a three year Indian bachelor’s degree? Do not assume automatic acceptance or rejection. DAAD advises three year bachelor’s graduates to contact the course coordinator before applying. Ask about your exact qualification and intended Master’s. Keep the written response with your application notes. A friend’s admission decision may involve a different degree, programme or intake. A useful email question: “I hold a [degree name] from [institution], completed over [duration]. I am interested in [exact programme] for [intake]. Could you please direct me to the eligibility rules for this qualification and any required subject credits?” 2. Understand APS and the dMAT update APS and dMAT answer different questions. Academic document verification is different from a language examination, and neither should be described as a guarantee of university admission. APS India verifies academic documents and qualifications issued by Indian institutions. Consult its official FAQs and your applicable checklist to establish which procedure applies. Avoid using an old social media screenshot as your application checklist. dMAT update checked on 24 October 2026 APS India’s 15 October notice describes dMAT as an additional requirement for selected Master’s applicant groups for Summer Semester 2027 onward. It says an updated list of affected fields will be announced. Transitional exemptions include APS online registration before 29 June 2026 or dispatch of complete APS documents before that date. People who already received an APS certificate do not need dMAT for that completed procedure. Where required, the dMAT certificate can follow the other APS application documents, but APS cannot issue the final certificate until it has verified the required dMAT result. Follow the full current instructions, including the rules for academic documents. Read the official APS dMAT notice. Because the guidance is changing, we have not turned the affected subject list into a permanent graphic. Before booking a test, check the official notice against your previous degree, planned intake and APS history. If your qualification combines subjects, ask for clarification rather than deciding from the name of the degree alone. Keep an application log with the dates of registration, document dispatch, delivery and any official correspondence. This is a planning suggestion, not an extra official requirement. A simple record is easier to consult than searching through months of email when a question arises. 3. German language requirements for a Master’s in Germany This is the part many students leave until late. First, identify the language of instruction. Next, find the accepted certificate and required result. Finally, check when that proof must be submitted. These are three separate questions. uni assist’s language certificate guidance says the accepted evidence and required level depend on the university and course. Some English-taught courses may still ask for German. Attendance confirmations or records of class hours are usually insufficient as sole proof of language proficiency. Language comparison: what to check before choosing a course Your study route Admission check German learning priority English taught Master’s Accepted English proof; any additional German requirement Build practical communication alongside your application German taught Master’s Exact German examination, result and submission deadline Work backwards from the required academic language standard Mixed language programme Separate requirements for both languages Plan for the German used in the actual modules Conditional admission Conditions written in the offer and when to fulfil them Follow the specified language pathway Is B2 German enough? B2 can be a meaningful learning milestone, but do not assume that a B2 course certificate satisfies a German taught Master’s requirement. DAAD’s guidance notes that C1 is often required, with variation by programme. Universities may specify examinations such as
